Majeshi yanayomuunga mkono kiongozi wa Libya Kanali Muammar Gaddafi yameshambulia waasi wanaoishikilia baadhi ya miji karibu na mji mkuu wa Tripoli, huku kukiwa hakuna ishara kuwa majeshi hayo yameweza kuvunja msukumo wa wapinzani kupata ushindi.

Akitoa wito wa kusitishwa kwa vurugu, Kanali Gaddafi ametupa lawama kwa kiongozi wa kundi la Al- Qaeda Bw. Osama bin Laden kuhusiana na uasi nchini Libya, akisema maandamano yanayoendelea yanachochewa na watu wanaotoa fedha pamoja na dawa za kulevya.

Katika mji wa Benghazi ambako uasi ulianzia hali watu wamekuwa wakisheherekea ushindi katika mji huo huku wanasesere waliotengenezwa kwa mfano wa Gaddafi pamoja na familia yake wananing’inia katika nguzo za taa za barabarani, na watu wamekuwa wakiimba kauli mbiu na kufyatua risasi hewani.

Afisa mmoja wa ngazi za juu wa Ufaransa anayehusika na masuala ya haki za binadamu amesema kuwa huenda kiasi cha hadi watu 2,000 wameuawa hadi sasa katika vuguvugu hilo ambalo lilianza mnamo Februari 15 mwaka huu.

Polisi nchini Kenya imemkamata kijana mmoja anayetuhumiwa kumdhalilisha baba yake anayeumwa katika eneo la Taita-Taveta.

Kijana huyo mwenye umri wa miaka 27 anatuhumiwa kumlawiti baba yake anayelala tu kitandani kufuatia maradhi katika kijiji cha Wesu divisheni ya Wundayi kwa kipindi muda wa miaka tisa, tukio ambalo limekuwa likitokea bila kutaarifiwa.

Polisi na Maafisa Afya wamesema baba huyo mwenye umri wa miaka 61 amekuwa akisumbuliwa na ugonjwa wa kiharusi na mara kwa mara amekuwa akipatiwa matibabu katika hospitali ya wilaya ya Wesu.

Mama wa mtuhumiwa huyo amesema amelazimika kukimbia nyumba yao kwa hofu ya kuuawa na mtuhumiwa huyo.

Mama huyo amesema mara nyingi amekuwa akikimbia nyumbani hapo kufuatia mtuhumiwa huyo kutishia kumuua yeye pamoja na ndugu zake iwapo wangethubutu kutoa taarifa wa vyombo husika.

Polisi walipata taarifa za kufanyika vitendo hivyo kutoka kwa baba huyo mwenyewe wakati walipokutana katika hospitali hiyo.

California Teen Building Brighter Future for Tanzanian Villagers

At just 16, Lily Gordon has already undertaken several projects to improve lives in a village in Africa.

It's hard to believe she's only 16. While most 16-year-olds are focused on getting their driver's licenses, Lily Gordon is focused on beating hunger in Tanzania. When I visited her family home in Berkeley, Calif., I immediately knew she was no ordinary teenager. As her father answered the door, Lily was in the kitchen cooking a delicious chicken dinner for her parents and the Go Inspire Go volunteer crew.

Lily's compassion developed at an early age. She showed signs of social awareness even at 10 years old. After learning about Africa and hearing about the starving children in Tanzania from a classmate, she wanted to help. For her 11th birthday, instead of presents, she asked her friends to donate money to help build a water pipe for a Tanzanian school.

"The idea of getting 25 more puzzles didn't seem as enchanting as the idea of being able to give kids water," Lily explained. She and her friends raised nearly $2,000 — more than Lily had ever imagined. When she was 12, another milestone, Lily took her first visit to Tanzania. She was struck by the beauty of the country, but even more affected by the inner beauty of the people.

"Being really immersed in the culture and seeing the people, I guess it made me want to help even more, just because I felt really connected to them and I felt they gave so much to me and were so welcoming to me even though they had so much less than me," Lily said.


What they lacked the most was food — a devastating part of their existence Lily witnessed first hand at the hospital. "Malnutrition is just part of the existence there almost. The bloated bellies, they're all very small for their age."

Lily learned that bread is imported to villages from big cities several hours away, but it's often rotten by the time it arrives. She came up with an idea that would save lives. When she returned home to California, she poured her heart into fundraising and learning how to build a brick oven to empower the villagers to make their own bread. The next year, she returned to Tanzania with this mission to build a new future with the villagers. The brick oven now feeds 200 orphans.

Last summer, during Lily's third trip, Lily, her family and her friends also built a rainwater harvest system to make clean water for the orphans. This summer, she plans to teach the villagers how to make their own smaller adobe ovens and a community garden to become self-sustaining.

"I feel like everyone needs to find something that really provides them with fulfillment and for me, this was it," Lily said. "I'm so lucky I found it when I was young, but I feel like if anyone got the joy that I received from just being with these people, working together to do what we could, then there's no way they would've turned down the opportunity."

She's half my age, but she's already embarked on a life lesson that I only realized a couple of years ago. I was privileged enough to volunteer in Jakarta, Indonesia, working with orphans and impoverished children on a digital photo project. Through the camera lens, they revealed a side of Jakarta — and of themselves — that broke through the language barrier. They showed me the slums in which they grew up, filled with tin-roofed shacks and mountains of trash. They showed me photos of their families, friends and the important people in their lives. They showed me their aspirations and hopes for a better future.

Like Lily, my life has been transformed because of this volunteer experience and the people I met. And you, too, can give while taking your own journey to other parts of the world. Leaving your comfort zone and putting your own needs on the back burner to build a brick oven for a village in Tanzania, or teach English to children in Thailand or clean up the earthquake-ravaged neighborhoods of Haiti, can open your eyes and your heart to a wealth of appreciation of your own life and your loved ones.

Reality Show - Growing Up African (Trip to Tanzania)

Due to the growing demand and popularity of the hit reality show "Growing Up African" there have been several inquiries pertaining to television access.

Growing Up African has become a huge success in several countries including the United States and U.K through the internet especially on their youtube channel.
In order to translate this success to the general public especially those in Tanzania, the cast have chosen to take a direct approach.

In a statement released by the family, Johnson the oldest son will be traveling to Dar es salaam for the month of February.
On this trip, he will meet with several executives from the entertainment and television realm in order to make the show available to the average person.

At the current moment, internet based entertainment is only vastly avalaible to those overseas. The purpose of this trip is to select a host television network for the reality show so it can become available to a much wider audience throughout East Africa.

IS 2011 FOR AFRICA?

Economist Razia Khan (head of African research for Standard Chartered Bank)

CNN: How do you see the outlook for Africa in 2011? What are some of the key things you look for?

Razia Khan: Generally it is positive -- our belief at Standard Chartered is that trend growth in Africa will continue to recover. Of course, after the global economic crisis in 2009 we saw better rates of growth in 2010, but not yet back to trend.
In 2011 there is a chance that we will get that much closer to those pre-crisis trend growth rates. We were looking at 6% to 7% growth rate in a number of frontier market economies -- that is the key expectation.
Of course there are risks to this scenario -- there has been a lot of press about the rise in food prices; we are looking with a special concern in East Africa and potentially adverse weather conditions that may prove to be a setback to growth.
Of course, political risks have featured very strongly at the start of the year as well -- but assuming all goes well, we are seeing good, sound growth prospects in a number of economies.

CNN: What are you basing that kind of optimism on?

RK: Part of it is that Africa's growth momentum was doing pretty well even before the crisis. Yes, we saw an interruption with the global economic crisis, no question about that, but Africa has come out of the crisis a lot better than many had expected.
Part of it has to do with the amount of leverage in the system -- a lot of it has to do with China and the strength of China and of course the support that has given to commodity prices.

CNN: How have China and Asia helped in the recovery in Africa?


RK: We have seen very imbalanced growth in the wake of the crisis. We've continued to see a recovery in Asia, most Asian emerging markets not only making good in the losses associated with the crisis, but seeing real growth, real value addition beyond that.
That, of course, has been a key support for Africa, although Europe, mostly the core of the Euro area, remains the key trading partner for Africa. We've seen great trade gains with the rest of the world -- especially developing Asia, especially China, and that has been a big source to African economies' performance.

CNN: 2011 is a big year for elections in Africa -- to what extent do you think politics is going to be a real key factor this year?


RK: Just in case anyone thought the environment was more benign for whatever reason, the events in Cote d'Ivoire have certainly acted as some sort of wake-up call.
Of course, we have the big events happening early on in the new year -- the referendum in Southern Sudan, this is going to be watched very closely. Political risks haven't gone away -- we could see a reshaping of the East African landscape. It's how the political players react to whatever emerges from that referendum that is going to be key to economic prospects.
And then, of course, in West Africa, in Nigeria, in April, another very important election, the passage of which could be a key driver of investor confidence -- local investor confidence initially, foreign investor confidence in time. There are these big political events that are going to be closely watched.

CNN: For the average person who wants to invest in Africa, what kind of advice would you give them?


RK: There are still very good growth prospects in Africa. One of the successes, of course, is that we hadn't seen negative growth across the region as a result of the crisis. Yes, a contraction in one or two economies -- South Africa being more exposed to the global economy, a few of the mining economies -- but in general, most African countries managed to sustain some kind of positive growth and those growth rates are picking up.
